Unearthing the Layers
The Interchurch Center × Isabella Jacob
Artwork: Isabella Jacob
This show began not with a commission but with a conversation. While working in the building that houses The Interchurch Center's gallery, I approached the curator with a proposal: a retrospective of the painter Isabella Jacob, whose decades of work deserved a proper showing and whose environmental considerations in her work I was drawn to.
I initiated the project, made the introduction, and stayed involved throughout—visiting Isabella's studio repeatedly and keeping the lines open between artist and gallery. The gallery handled the commercial aspects of the show and its installation.
I'm not sure I would have discovered her work if it weren't for my ongoing interview series at the time in which I interviewed her husband, the climate scientist Klaus Jacob, on urban adaptation and resilience.
